Pet dog 'caused' kitchen fire at family home in Peckham

A pet dog looking for his biscuits started a kitchen fire at a family home in south east London, it has emerged.
Leo, a Boxer/Staffordshire cross probably turned the hob on when jumping up to get a bag of biscuits left on the cooker top, his owner Jean Mosey said.
The bag was inside a child's car seat left on the hob that quickly ignited.
No-one was injured and Leo escaped unscathed, but the fire damaged a third of the ground floor at the Mosey family's three-storey home in Peckham.
Mrs Mosey, 45, and her husband Allen, 67, were out shopping with their daughter Stephanie and their granddaughter when she received a call to say the kitchen was on fire.

Absurd. I don't get why dogs are so often allowed in kitchens. It's such a dangerous place for a dog to be. They can get underfoot and have hot food dropped on them by accident, they can jump on stoves and counters (if they are large enough), and it's just not safe to have dogs in the kitchen when food is being cooked EVER. Both my dogs are absolutely banned from the kitchen, and IMO it's just safer for them to keep out.

Well my dogs spend a lot of time in the kitchen but I never put things on the hob unless cooking. I can't imagine why anyone would put a childs car seat on the hob. Stupid owner syndrome strikes again.

I'm like you Trouble in that I never put anything on the hob unless I'm cooking and I also make absolutely sure that when I've finished the hob is turned off.

As for dogs being in the kitchen and horror of horrors jumping up on counters and stoves, it's not difficult if you're consistent to train a dog NOT to jump up on them ... I even trained my cat. My kitchen is in the centre of my house and I only have one front door which is in the kitchen so my dogs spend a lot of time there., but they both know better to come near the stove when I'm cooking or preparing food.

my friends boxer would steal the lamb roasting out of the oven! to be fair she could also open most doors. her first owner gave her up as she kept opening windows and taking herself off out. The barricades my friend created were nothing short of engineering genius

wonder what the insurance companies stance on feckwittery is? so.... you left food items in reach of your dog left unattended on top of a hob? with flammable material on top..... right......... force majure?

shouldnt mock glad the daft dog survived and no one was hurt!

My kitchen has no doors, but dogs are banned from entering rooms with no carpeting. No bathrooms, as they like to drink from toilets and destroy toilet paper etc. No laundry room as there are dangers such a hot water heaters, chemicals, etc. No garage as chemicals etc. Any rooms with non carpeted floors they're just trained to keep their paws off. Pretty easy.
