Could a kiss from your dog be GOOD for you?

It is well documented that owning a dog boosts a person's wellbeing.
But the health benefits of sharing your life with a furry friend may not end there.
Scientists believe the microbes lurking in a dog's gut could have a probiotic effect on the owners' body.
And to determine if their suspicions are true, the researchers at the University of Arizona, are recruiting volunteers to take part in a study to test the theory.

It was a common belief in the 1950's & 60's, that a healthy dog's lick was antiseptic.

I don't mind my dogs sleeping on my bed or licking my face or legs but I do draw the line about any dog licking a plate or dish I've eaten off. The dogs have their own dishcloths and tea towels and their dishes are always washed separately to mine.

A pet in the house can do wonders for a persons immune status - however, the pet must be healthy to begin with.

Being licked by dogs to me is frankly disgusting. Mind you, I find juicy NASTY tongue style kisses from humans to be absolutely repulsive, as well. Think I'll stick to NOT getting licked by dogs, regardless of any possible health benefits.

Lol Myra!

Azz I completely agree with you. As long as a dog is regularly wormed, I do not mind a lick on the face. Ben gives the most delicious wolf kisses every morning when he jumps up on the bed for cuddles, a very gentle lick on the lips, which I wipe with a wet wipe immediately afterwards, just in case he has been licking his bottom! He is wormed regularly, and I see no harm in this, but I don't allow to lick my grandson.

Little kids are prime victims for Nigredo to fork over a tongue assault. He always goes straight for the mouth, too. I am always disgusted, even though oftentimes I find that the child giggles and doesn't find it disgusting at all. I always try and stop him right away, and tell the child not to let him do that because dogs lick their butts, that usually works. It's unfortunate that stopping him might be a detriment to their health. It's even MORE unfortunate that I'm going to keep making him stop.

A mother moose licks her baby's mouth to introduce enzymes into the baby's digestive tract that will enable it to digest the food it eats as an adult.
Hmmmm. Maybe old Mother nature is on to something.
But since I know my dogs lick their anus and genitals with their tongues......
