Irish Setter dies after being poisoned at Crufts, owners say

An Irish Setter has died after being poisoned at Crufts, his co-owner believes.
Three-year-old Thendara Satisfaction (Jagger), bred by Dee Milligan-Bott and co-owned by her and Alexandra Lauwers, collapsed after returning to Belgium the following day.

An post-mortem examination has revealed various poisons had been put in cubes of meat. A full toxicology report is awaited.

They're just talking about this on Crufts at this moment. It's awful and deeply shocking for the owners. Unbelievable how someone could deliberately poison any dog. I'm totally shocked.

If it's proved, it's absolutely disgusting.

Any seasoned dog show person Knows never ever leave a dog unattended.

Way back in the 1970's we had a fairly successful White Afghan hound. I was sitting on the bench with our dog when this older lady came up and tried to give my dog food.
my immediate response was to hit her wrist as hard as I could to knock the food item out of her hand.

she complained to the show secretary of the assault who then came over to me.

He was going to call the police and I said please do this lady was trying to poison my dog as far as I knew.

The show secretary said to the lady she might well be prosecuted instead if she wanted to carry on with her complaint.

So it just goes to show even back then one had to be with a dog at all times at a show, and anyone who leaves a dog by itself is partly to blame

Popster - " I'm totally shocked."

You shouldn't be, the bitchy, aggressive, pig headed behaviour at Crufts is notorious. All brought about by humans in built desire to be better than their fellow humans.
As TW has said anyone going there who would leave their dog unattended is asking for trouble

ETA - Poor dog, hope you have a better life in heaven.

I'm sorry, but it's very hypercritical to say the owner is somehow responsible without knowing the full facts. Everyone has a call of nature and if the owner was alone, what the heck were they supposed to do.

I agree, to leave dogs to wander around stalls is not responsible, but at least get the full facts before berating the owner without, as yet, any cause.

The show is supposed to be for dog lovers and most who attend are. There are crazy people in all walks of life and however did this, if it is proven, is obscene.

It's all so very, very sad

It's probably best that I leave my opinions of many dog showers/handlers out of this thread. It wasn't smart to leave the dog alone, sure... but it only takes a second for some hideous person with ill intent to cause harm. I don't blame the owner.

People here just fling a bit of poisoned meat into the yard, you may never even see your dog eat it, but then find the dog dead later. Maybe they were naive (foolishly believing that nobody there has ill intent) or just careless, but it's not their fault. In any case, this is horrid. Poor dog

I posted this on Breedia after hearing it on the radio. That is just so sick, I can't imagine someone being that evil.

According to the radio this morning it is now thought the culprit was not another exhibitor but someone with a grudge against Crufts or showing.

In the days when I showed a number of dogs we tried never to leave them alone. When showing regularly you get to know your fellow breed exhibitors very well and are frequently benched next to the same people. It was customary to ask your fellow exhibitors to watch your dogs if you had to leave them for a moment.

The public can be a real pain sticking their heads and hands into the dogs faces on the benches. I can remember a Doberman biting someone in the face because they did this so dogs were 'watched' to keep both them and the public safe. You can also buy benching nets to go over the front of the bench and of course crates.

And how do they think that it wasn't a competitor? Sounds like saving face as even the handler of the dead dog believes it was a competitor. I don't believe for one second that it was anybody other than a competitor. The story is missing enough parts that they can kind of do what they want to with it at this point. Why blame someone who competes at crufts instead of making it look like there's no way a competitor would do something this ghastly? Makes sense to me to try and save face like this, the owner of the dead dog said she won't show anymore, forbid others agree with her! I don't believe it wasn't a competitor at all.
