Save Nero the hero: Police dog on death row

HERO police dog Nero is on death row because the force will not pay for a life-saving operation.

The seven-year-old sable German shepherd has spent a career catching criminals, finding missing people, and even providing blood transfusions for fellow hounds.

But now he will be put to sleep rather than be put forward for the routine procedure that has a 90 per cent chance of success.

How dreadful, I am hoping that public opinion forces a change of heart, that dog has spent his life risking his life for them, and thats the appreciation he gets. Disgusting

Thank goodness someone somewhere has got some sanity. Awful shame about the handler losing his other dog, how do they justify that decision, totally nuts the lot of them. Why not let the handler have another police dog instead

The article speaks of budget deficits. It costs a ton to train a new dog, so they couldn't justify paying so much for surgery and also needing another dog. It just sounds to me like a department already facing large deficits was just goaded and guilted by a cheesy online news site into spending the money.

I'm glad the dog gets a second chance, but I can't help but wonder if things like this caused the budget issues to begin with. I really don't like underfunded police departments. Crime goes through the roof when it happens here, and the bigger picture sometimes needs to be looked at.
