The lawsuit lists internal bleeding, liver malfunction or failure, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, seizures and kidney failure as symptoms
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Frank Lucido, who claimed that after purchasing a bag of Beneful, all three of his dog fell ill
The suit claims more than 3,000 people have reported that their dogs became very sick or died

The food is of low quality, but I doubt it caused all these problems. It's full of junk fillers, color additives, low quality meat derivatives, and they run cheesy, gimmicky commercials to draw owners in. I'd certainly not feed my dog Beneful, but I know many people feed it and their dogs are okay. I doubt he can prove a direct link with stomach and liver bleeding with the food. In any case, the food is certainly not recommended.

Just curious...I saw a breed specific brand at work, Eukanuba Bulldog. Would that be a better alternative to Beneful? I get a store discount now so I'd consider switching to a better brand. The Eukanuba bag says it's formulated for joint support, something to combat intestinal fortitude and it's easier to eat for bully shaped jaws. All of that sounds like a plus for Callie. Opinion?

If memory serves me correctly Eukunuba test on animals so I personally wouldn't feed my dog it. Curious about the Beneful food though.

Eukanuba is the only brand I know of that is gimmicky enough to make breed specific recipes. It's not great food, and it's way overpriced. Check out Victor dog food. It's a great food value wise, and their grain free foods are excellent if budget isn't a huge issue. If it is, their grain inclusive food is priced well if you can find it locally. Nigredo eats their High Pro Plus or High Energy, I think it would be great for Callie. Pure Balance from Wal Mart is decent, my dog did well on it for quite some time. Iams healthy naturals has wheat, which Nigredo doesn't tolerate too well, but is an okay food otherwise. Sportsmix Wholesomes is pretty decent quality, but Nigredo was not a fan of the taste, rare for him. Kirkland Signature from Costco is good if you can avoid the quality control issues. So many better and less costly foods then Eukanuba.

Yes they test on animals... um... it's dog food. All dog food companies test on animals.

Though all makes have to test feed for palatability etc., there is a big difference between this kind of test feeding, and some of the horrific testing which does take place, especially for specific treatment diets. If you have a strong enough stomach, Google, Border Collie Rescue - Iams Tests, for an example of this.
No images, but disturbing reading.

I could only find one article, and it was only a summary. Any pages it linked to had been deleted. Strange.

Although this is an old page, it does still come up OK on my pc. The list of experiments is almost at the bottom of the page under, NOTES TO EDITORS. An alternative address that works (at least it does for me) is:
http://www.bordercollierescue.org/da...iamstests.html
I hope this helps.

Seems nothing was done, no legal action was taken against them. Sad how many animals suffered, and how the spokesman for the company says that the casualties were acceptable losses so as to better the future for animals. But, once again... here in America, they probably broke a ton of laws, yet due to their size etc. were able to evade punishment. This is an old story, but IAMS is still thriving and has several new recipes out, they've joined the grain free train and everything.
