Border collie rescued after 300ft Brecon mountain fall

A dog has been rescued by her owner after she fell 300ft down a snow-covered mountain in the Brecon Beacons.

Border collie Georgie spent 18 hours in snow with a broken leg after falling off Fan Hir peak on Saturday afternoon.

Owner Simon Pierce climbed down the mountain to search for her but called it off when it went dark.

The next morning, and with the help of friends and partner Heather, he found Georgie and immediately rushed her to the vet.

Mr Pierce, of Resolven, near Neath, said: "She has got a complicated leg break and some bruises and scrapes.

"The vet was surprised how she survived. She is a tough old boot. It was a miracle she survived."

Lucky to survive. Long ago, I was watching a dog (Golden retriever) for a friend who was abroad for a few months. My mother and I, along with each of our dogs and the friend's dog, took an off-leash walk in the woods . . . area generally seems safe . . . dog all mild tempered with good recall. The friend's dog fell to its death off a puny little 15 foot cliff face. It was horrible for everyone. DO NOT ASSUME DOGS ARE SMART ABOUT FALLING OFF SHEER DROPS!!!!!

Lucky indeed.

Regardless of the fall - exposure at this time of year can be a killer.
