Twisted trade of tiny puppies having ears tied down to look 'fashionable'

With their ears tied to make them stick fashionably upwards, these tiny puppies were driven for miles across Europe to be sold as cute Christmas presents in the UK.

British dog lovers who buy pathetic pets like these will probably be unaware that the animals are victims of an East European puppy farm trade that often cruelly flouts welfare regulations.

Thousands of dogs are trafficked annually – often in cramped conditions, on fake papers and while too young to travel.

Carer Jill Witte said: “More and more puppies are brought to us in a bad state.

“Many are under age and should still be with their mums. They are driven across Europe in dreadful conditions.”

The pups in our photos, part of a consignment of seven French bulldogs, were confiscated as they arrived at Dover because Customs officials feared they were no more than 12 weeks old.

That is the age when travel rules state they must be vaccinated. Travel to the UK is not allowed for another 21 days, by when pups are 15 to 16 weeks old.

Bending that rule means they could be carrying parasites and diseases *including rabies.

The seized animals were on their way to Peterborough, where Istavan Kiss, originally from Hungary, has advertised dogs for sale online for more than Ł900.
...[snip]...
The pups seized at Dover are being nursed to health at the Animal Inn kennels, near Deal, owned by Jill. She added: “These tiny bulldogs arrived weak and ailing after a long journey, apparently without easy access to food or water.

“Even more cruelly, they had their ears bound with insulating tape. We never saw this trafficking like this before the Pet Passport scheme was relaxed.”
...[snip]...
Importer Mr Kiss insisted he abides by the rules.

He said: “My brother is a breeder in my country. I’ve been doing this for five months and have applied for a licence. There has not been a problem before.”

I wonder how Mr Kiss would feel if his ears [or other parts] were bound with insulating tape "to make them look better"?

As upsetting as this is, it's not exactly something new. We've been "maiming" dogs in the name of esthetics and "practicality" for centuries. And I know this will be an extremely unpopular opinion: but I consider selective breeding of dogs who can no longer reproduce without assistance or breathe properly only because we think "squished faces" are baby-like and adorable any less cruel than this.

The ears are not "tied" they are taped. German Shepherds often have their ears taped like this as puppies so the ears stand properly as an adult. It does not hurt and its not cruel. The word cruel is thrown around so much. Now not giving them food and water is cruel but the tape... not so much.

As for rules of making pups wait until 16 weeks to travel, kinda silly to me. You don't make puppies within the country wait that long otherwise breeders would have to take care of puppies way too long. Also, just because they are older doesn't mean they are vaccinated.

The laws about making puppies wait until they are 16 weeks old is for puppies imported into the UK. They have to have rabies shots and passports, signed by a veterinarian, before being permitted to be imported into the UK, and rabies shots cannot be given to younger puppies.

These puppies are being illegally imported, and it is also illegal in the UK for their ears to be taped like that.

Just as it is illegal for dogs to have their tails docked and their ears cropped in the UK.

Silly? That is the law in the UK and these puppies are being illegally imported.

Either way, the ears are not "tied down". That is just dramatic journalism for shock value. I'd wager a lot that it doesn't hurt and they barely feel it. It's not illegal here, but that is another story.

As for imported puppies having to be 16 weeks before they can be sold or whatnot... fair enough. But again, older does not mean properly vaccinated.
