Rescue dogs move into £1.75 million new homes just in time for Christmas

Christmas has come early for seven down-on-their-luck dogs, who moved back into their rescue home following a £1.7 million makeover.

The animals had been living in 'drafty' temporary kennels since June, while the purpose built accommodation at Jerry Green Dog Rescue centre was built.

Centre manager Sapphire McInnes said the move was “the best Christmas present” she could have asked for and that the dogs “seemed happier than ever”.

She said: “The new kennels are amazing, it is a bit of a shock after the temporary kennels, every time we see them it is like we have to pinch ourselves.

“The temporary kennels were drafty and were quite dark, which was fine in the summer months, but would have been awful for the dogs in winter.

“So it is good timing in that sense, and obviously it is lovely that it has happened just in time for Christmas.”

The full development of the site which will include 27 kennels in total, and a large exercise barn, is due to be completed next Spring.

Seven kennels were fast-tracked to be finished in time for Christmas to house the dogs on site, and include under-floor heating, radiators, access to outside play areas and lots of natural light.

Ms McInnes said: “It’s not nice for any dog to be in a kennel for Christmas, but we want to make them as happy and comfortable as possible.”

The dogs, which are all available for adoption, will even have some gifts from Santa to open on Christmas Day, including turkey flavoured treats.

Kennel handler Hollie Musson said: “We receive a lot of donations in the run up to Christmas, toys and food, some of which are wrapped up. So we let the dogs open them on Christmas day and you can see how much they enjoy it.

“The team are on site at the centre everyday over the Christmas period, we take it in turns, a human has to be fed, watered and looked after every day and a dog is no different.”

The redevelopment of the Warsop Lane site, in Blidworth, will provide space for a further 20 dogs, and is one of five Jerry Green Dog Rescue centres in the UK.

Twenty-one-year-old Lauren Easom, has been volunteering at the centre for the past 18 months, after adopting her own family dog Jasper from the shelter.

She said: “I volunteer three of four days a week and get involved in everything.
“It’s quite a small centre so my duties include everything from cleaning the kennels out to walking the dogs or doing administration.

“The best part for me is seeing the dogs getting adopted, it is great to see them so happy.

“The new kennels are 100 per cent better than the kennels before, you can see how happy the dogs are.”
