Police stab dog to death after it attacked an officer during a drugs raid

Police stabbed a dog to death after it attacked a trainee detective constable during a drug raid.

The pet - which was not thought to be a banned breed - was knifed after CS spray had no effect.

No drugs were found at the house in Lewisham, south-east London, and the killing is now being investigated by Scotland Yard’s anti-corruption unit.

Police said the officer was bitten on the leg and the dog then clamped its jaws around him, refusing to let go, during the dawn raid.

The spokesman went on: “Other officers present attempted to remove the dog from the officer’s leg and CS spray was deployed.

“Officers also called for assistance from a police dog unit and armed officers.

"Due to growing concern for the officer’s safety and an inability to control or remove the animal, it was deemed necessary to use force.

“The dog was stabbed with a knife by an officer at the scene and has died as a result of its injuries.”

The spokesman said that the injured officer was stable but will need surgery on his injured leg
.
No drugs were found at the address and no arrests were made.

Police have received a complaint regarding the incident and the matter has been passed to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards.

I do hope that the injured officer recovers soon, but whether the dog was on the banned dog list or not, it was obviously out of control by its owner, and sadly suffered the ultimate penalty.
