A heroic German Shepherd named Fuzz has won an award for his bravery after a suspect attacked him with a metal bar.
Fuzz was pursuing an armed robbery suspect in Downham when he attacked him with a metal bar.
This gashed open his face under his right eye, but the courageous pooch didn’t give up.
Despite being covered in blood from a cut and a nosebleed, Fuzz kept the violent suspect on the ground until officers could catch up and arrest him. The suspect was charged for several offences – including animal cruelty for attacking Fuzz.
Fuzz received emergency treatment and has made a full recovery – and now his bravery has been recognised at the Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards, where he won the Public Service Animal of the Year title.
Fuzz is now seven, and has been living with his handler PC Craig Calthorpe since he was a seven-week-old pup.
Fuzz works and lives with PC Craig Calthorpe, helping him to sniff out and chase runaway suspects. He has also had special training to help officers in dangerous situations involving guns and firearms.
PC Craig Calthorpe of the Dogs Support Unit, said, “It was amazing to get nominated, let alone win this prestigious award and it’s testament to Fuzz’s bravery that he refused to back down even after he was struck, and shows the dedication of our dogs who put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis.”
