Police probe attack on beagle

POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a brutal dog attack in Kilwinning saw a Beagle savaged by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The attack took place just before 7pm on Monday, October 20, near the cycle track and footpath which runs between Pennyburn Road and Byrehill Road.

The Beagle suffered a number of puncture wounds to its leg and has since received veterinary treatment.

The dog allegedly responsible was described as a white Staffie, with tan markings around its face and neck.

PC Hyndes, of Kilwinning Community Policing Team, said: “While the majority of dog owners are responsible, this incident should act as a reminder to everyone of the need to keep their dogs under control when in public places.

Police Scotland issued the following reminder to dog owners:

*Keep dogs on a lead around busy roads.

*If you allow your dog out into the garden, make sure that fences and gates will keep them safe and secure.

*If you know your dog is not good with other dogs, animals, children or with people, then avoid letting them off the lead in public areas and places where they could come into contact.

*If you allow teenagers or youngsters to walk the dog, make sure they would be able to control them while out walking.

*Always clean up after your dog, carry bags and dispose of the waste in a litter bin.

*If you are in an area where there are farm animals or wildlife, make sure you keep your dog under control.

I hope the poor Beagle recovers and that whoever was responsible for the attacking dog is found. Unfortunately it will probably be the dog who will pay the ultimate penalty.

It is also a pity that the police have to yet again remind some inconsiderate dog owners how to behave.
