Dogs and hens in prison 'pet therapy'

Prisoners at Hydebank Wood have been looking after two Labradors and a number of hens as part of a 'pet therapy' project aimed at helping troubled inmates with underlying mental health issues.

Dog handlers at the south Belfast facility have trained the vulnerable prisoners on how to take care of two rehomed dogs, including obedience training, exercising and agility work.

Prison Service Director General Sue McAllister said the scheme has been having a "very positive" effect on those who have been taking part.

She continued: "While there is a well-known and accepted benefit to pet ownership, the therapeutic benefits are less well-known.

"We have found a positive change in the behaviours of the women prisoners involved, which is not only good for their health and well-being, but it is also good for our staff and ultimately the wider community."

A number of rescued battery hens have also been introduced at Hydebank Wood, with inmates seeing the "therapeutic benefits" of managing and caring for the birds.

Ms McAllister added: "Plus they also provide fresh free range eggs."

The announcement of the project coincides with World Mental Health Day and comes as part of a series of new programmes introduced at Hydebank and Maghaberry by Action Mental Health.

I think it is an excellent scheme, although the idea of "free range" eggs in a prison seems a bit of an oxymoron to me!
