Border Terrier saved by the bell

An adventurous dog was saved by the bell after he became trapped down a rabbit hole for four days.

Border terrier Henry left owner Beverley Leonard in a panic after he vanished while out on their morning walk and could not be found.

And despite fire crews last weekend scouring fields for the pooch, it was only when Beverley ripped her doorbell from her home - and pressed the buzzer while searching - that they had any success.

For two hours, they put the doorbell amplifier into every rabbit hole, sounding the distinctive noise to set off Henry’s barking, until they heard him woof back as they tried the very last hideaway.

An animal rescue unit from Knutsford Fire Station spent hours combing the field for the missing pup and used a snake eye camera to check any confined spaces.

Beverley said: “We tried the doorbell everywhere, and we were about to give up, when we heard him.

“His barking was very faint at first and then got louder and louder as he was obviously making his way as near to the surface as he could.

“They had to saw through a holly bush and dig until they got to Henry.

“I am just so relieved to have him back, any dog owner would understand how awful it is when they go missing and you don’t know where they are.”

A lovely outcome for lucky Henry, but I cannot but help wonder who had to pay for all the efforts of the fire crews.
