Labradors are so passé now

One day, Pepe will meet someone who fails to fall in love with him instantly. So far he hasn't. Everyone he meets wants to pet him, pat him, adopt him, buy him or steal him.

Isn't he cute? Isn't he sweet? Isn't he a little darlin'? He's so gorgeous. Such comments are all he's ever heard. It must be the same for George Clooney.

This is why Pepe the Pod is, beyond question, the most wonderful dog in the world.

Actually, his full title is Pepe the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. Podengo is the breed of rabbit-hunting dogs, 'pequeno' means 'smallest' in his native Portugal, hence Pepe, a suitably Iberian name. We proud owners call them Pods.
...[snip]...
...when I was growing up, there were only about three types of dog: labradors, which posh people kept behind grilles in the back of their Volvos; snuffling Pekingese, which fussy old ladies dragged behind them; while the rest of us had to be happy with the product of unauthorised alfresco canine coupling - or, as we called them, 'mongrels'.

Since then, we've had newly-invented breeds: Horgi (a cross between a husky and a corgi), Puggles (pug and beagle), Schnoodle (schnauzer and poodle), and no doubt someone's working on a Cockup (spaniel and who cares?).

'Designer crossbreeds,' they call them. To me, though, they're still mongrels.

The relaxation of import laws also means interesting dogs from all over the world are arriving in Britain. Indeed, the Kennel Club says that 25 native breeds - such as Welsh terriers and otterhoungs - are now on its 'vulnerable' list.

Pepe the Pod might be cute, but he and his like are the reason why so many native breeds are on the vulnerable list.

And I do not think that Labradors are passé at all.

What were they originally bred for?
Oh yeah, hunting rabbits.
I use a slingshot. Only cost me $10.00 Cdn. Marbles are $1.00 for 50 at the dollar store.
Please explain to me why I would pay $700.00 for a rabbit hunting dog that doesnt hunt rabbits but sleeps on my $1500.00 leather sofa.
Nice enough story. Cute, I suppose. But not cute enough to sell to me.
I doubt 7 or 8 of them can pull a sled with 1500lbs on it.
If at-all, not very far.
In my world their irritating little yapping and "run back to my humans for protection" reflex would serve only to annoy bears to the point of "Anything gets in my way and they're getting hurt".
Also, Malka has another excellent point.
