Traditional British dog breeds facing extinction

Traditional British dog breeds such as deerhounds, otterhounds, Lancashire heelers and Welsh terriers risk becoming extinct as they are forced out by trendy canines like bulldogs and pugs.

The Kennel Club has 25 native breeds on its 'vulnerable' list, including many breeds of countryside dogs.

Their original roles in agriculture are no longer needed while the popularity of small 'handbag' dogs has soared.

The vulnerable status covers breeds with fewer than 300 puppy registrations in a year.

No otterhound puppies at all were listed in the first quarter of 2014 and the figure for Lancashire heelers, which wer used to nip at cattle's feet during herding, was only 32.

There were 31 Clumber spaniel puppies listed, 16 Sealyham terriers, 96 Welsh terriers and 68 deerhounds.

In contrast there were 2,119 French bulldogs registered, up nearly half on 2013.

The figure for pugs was 1,921, up a tenth on 2013, while 1,565 long and smooth coat Chihuahua pups were registered.

These figures for the "fashionable" breeds that many people copy the "celebrities" owning, do not, of course, take into consideration the many unregistered puppies from BYBs and puppy farms, and those illegally imported.

Such a shame about the traditional British dogs.

Hmmmm. Reminds of a slightly similar chain of events.
Out of an estimated calculation of 112 there are only about a 1/2 dozen or so genetically preCoumbian Indigenous North American dogs left.
Qimmiq(CED&GreenLander) Malamute, Chihauhua, Xoloitzcintli, American Dingo, and PerroSinPelo.
Mind you the reason the rest are gone is due greatly to the fact the Governments of USA & Canada outlawed them to take away the independence of the Red Nation peoples.
And of course the remaiming few NADogs interbred with genetic European dogs.
So, a land almost 4 million square kilometres in size has only 6 of it's genetically original dog breeds left.
UK's land mass is around 244,000 sq.km.
I personally think they are doing real well.
Albeit, it is sad to lose any breed of dog.

Sorry.
Google has shown why I failed Geography
N & S America combined covers around 16,300,000 square miles of terra firma.
Great Britain covers just over 94,000 square miles.
Also, not just "North American" dogs but all new world dogs, both N & S America, paleoAmerican perhaps is the term.
