Why is the RSPCA killing so many pets

When Dilys Hadley answered the door to the RSPCA she had no reason to suspect there was anything to fear.

The retired teacher had donated to the charity in the past and was a keen supporter of its animal welfare work. So she assumed the man on her doorstep was fundraising.

But what happened next was staggering. The inspector informed her they had received a report from a member of the public that her cat, Janet, was wandering around with an injured eye.

Dilys, 62, said that yes, Janet did have an eye problem, but she was going to the vet after the weekend, when Dilys's daughter would be there and could help get Janet into her travel basket.
...[snip]...

Then told Dilys she could see Janet one last time before she was put down..
Statistics show that the charity is now destroying almost half of the animals it has contact with.

Cos their shelters are full and every day new animals come in? Because people keep breeding and abusing animals who then end up in rescues who have no space? Just a thought

But the animals mentioned in the article were not abused. They were pets who were very much loved.

Because the cat had an eye condition which it must have had at least a few days for a report to have been logged and acted on and the owner wanted to wait until after the weekend to have it looked at by a vet??

One cat with a bad eye - what about the other pets mentioned?

Whether it is the Mail Online or not, you cannot dismiss all the stories.

Don't forget, the RSPCA act on reports from concerned members of the public. They visit and, if in their opinion, there is a right for concern, a vet then makes a decision on whether that opinion is valid.

Another article, in my opinion, of where they are damned if they do and damned if they don't act

Chris '
I agree, there could be a different side to this story . The poor cat could have been in a lot of pain for some time .

A few years ago a vicious old man told everyone that my dog had bitten his ankle. I made sure the Gardai met my dogs as soon as I could and my heart was in my mouth. The collie concerned has broken teeth and he was wearing thick wellies and trousers and in fact he had hit her with his stick and she had not retaliated but fled to me. Reporting animals needs great care and why in this case was the cat simply not treated?

Going from memory rather than re-reading the article, the cat, I think, had a brain tumour.

If the cat could have been treated, would you risk sending it back to an owner who was 'waiting' to take it to the vets?
