A stray dog list in Cornwall has gone online

A STRAY dog list in Cornwall has gone online as fewer are being reported missing. Cornwall Council’s dog welfare team have made sure the website – www.cornwall.gov.uk/straydogs – will list stray dogs handed in so owners can hopefully track their hound down.

The enhanced service was launched as it was reported that, for the second year running, the number of stray dog handed into the council had fallen.
...[snip]...
Allan Hampshire, the council’s head of public health and protection, said: “We have a robust system in place for re-charging the owners of stray dogs for the costs incurred by the council in picking up strays and arranging for them to be looked after.
...[snip]...

“We hope that the free dog micro-chipping events we have held in partnership with Dog’s Trust over the past few months, which has seen over 1,500 dogs micro-chipped, will lead to a further reduction in the number of stray dogs reported to the Council.

“In partnership with Dogs Trust, we are able to offer free dog micro chipping until March 2015.”

All dogs are housed at licensed boarding establishments and the dog’s welfare is an important consideration during their stay in kennels.

Only when the dog is returned to the owner or re-homed via an appropriate charity, will the dog’s details will be taken off the website.

It sounds like a good idea and hope it leads to more stray/lost dogs being reunited with their owners.

What a really good idea, this should happen Nationwide. Agree with Fourlegz, chipping would be better, but there will always be those who have not updated their details!

D'ya know, never thought about forgetting to update details - what a good point.
I think chipping will become law from next year in the UK.

Microchips here are registered under the ID number of the owner and also by the vet who chips the dogs, who registers the chip number and the owners ID number with the Ministry of Agriculture.

If a person moves they must inform the Ministry of the Interior of their change of address, so the owner of a lost or stray dog that is picked up can always be traced to their current address by their ID number.

I wonder if they register them on doglost as well (in the dog found section obviously!) as I guess not all dogs found will necessarily be 'local' eg if they had been stolen and dumped for instance and people wouldnt necessarily think of looking on a 'local' website
